Research and experience over the years has clearly shown that children benefit enormously when adults in their lives make a point to spend time and energy with them. Years ago this was not such an issue - no TV, no computer games etc.
We know how challenging it can be sometimes to think of things to do to keep children occupied and engaged, and that's why we are here - to help you.
In today’s busy modern world it can be tempting to just park a child in front of the television or plug them into a games console, but the truth is that when children are given attention and play time with adults, they have been proven to ultimately "do better" in life both academically and as individuals. This means that they get better grades in school, have fewer behavioral problems, have better health, and are far less likely to become addicted to drugs, alcohol, or indulge in other harmful or antisocial behaviors.- An adult’s attitude is key to a child’s successful learning. (National Teacher Research Panel)
- Children who are read to at least three times a week start school ready to learn and are able to master reading and language skills more quickly. (Early Childhood Longitudinal Study)
- Singing, talking and playing with young children activates the construction of their developing brain and has a positive impact on their future learning and career success. (Carnegie Foundation)
- Youths who have positive family role models and good family communication are 2.5 times less likely to use alcohol than youth without these assets. (Oman, Vesely, et.al.)
As children, nearly all of us had at least one adult who made a positive addition and impression in our lives. Now that we’re grown up (or in the case of younger babysitters, now that we're growing up) it's our turn to make a difference.
Adults also benefit from spending time with children. There’s a reason why the biblical phrase "Out of the mouths of babes…" is still something we say today. Children have a fresh way of looking at the world and they often can help us as adults to remember the joy and beauty in life.
We also know that when there is a tough time with a child for whatever reason, that this can be a parent's deepest worry. At www.youhavekids.com we hope to offer tools and other resources to help you face some of the difficulties that children can cause, whether that's something as simple as getting a juice stain out of carpet or more potentially worrisome like dealing with bed wetting or a child who struggles with reading.Children are hard work and the learning curve for any parent is very high. Those without children have no idea just how hard or how high. Or what a difference they make to your life. They are indeed life changing - at all levels. Kids are a treasure. Investment in your child through play and reading etc. will help set him or her up for life.
Please don't hesitate to write to us with any suggestions. Whether that's for an improvement to something that already exists or an idea for something new that you would like to see.
We are also interested in feedback about our web site. We are here to help and we are interested to know what you and the children in your life have enjoyed and/or found useful.
